INTERVIEW WITH ROSE FUNERAL ( Cincinnati, Ohio, USA )
Answered By Ryan ( Guitar )
Rose Funeral is a death metal band out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Comparable to those of The Black Dahlia Murder, At The Gates, and Prayer for Cleansing, they bring fast paced riffs, bone crushing breakdowns, and in your face melodies. They make an unstopable force which will be known to everyone. Playing various shows in the tri-state area Rose Funeral built a sizeable fan base bringing death metal together with raw emotion and energy. Doing all the recording themselves, they released a demo titled “Buried Beneath the Blood” in March of ’06. In August of ’06 they self released their second ep titled “Crucify.Kill.Rot.” which was very well accepted amongst their fans and fellow bands. Rose Funeral has been busier than ever writing new material and playing shows to further their reputation as a band, not to underestimate and hopefully, a band that will have a chance to show the world that they can hold it down with the best of them. "...Savage, Death tinged, breakdown-ridden Metal from Ohio -essential for fans of Arkangel, The Black Dahlia Murder and Prayer For Cleansing, these Cincinnati bruisers will crush you with their seemingly effortless blend of apocalyptic Death Metal, eerie soundscapes and ominous demonic vokills."
ROSE FUNERAL Shared The Stage With :
The Black Dahlia Murder, Unearth, Walls of Jericho, The Red Chord, Animosity, Too Pure To Die, The Faceless, Dead To Fall, As Blood Run Black, Emmure, With Blood Comes Cleansing, Becoming The Archetype, Dead Man In Reno, For The Fallen Dreams, Diskreet, Last House On The Left, CDC, Once Nothing, My Bitter End, EndWell, Year Of Desolation, Nights Like These, In This Moment, The Burning Season, Veil Of Maya, Iscariot and more.
Greets, this is Herry SIC doing LOST IN CHAOS Mediazine interview. Great to meet ROSE FUNERAL indeed! You are brutal as fuck!
Thank you Herry! Love the support! This is Ryan the Guitarist doing this interview!
Hi! Up till quite recently I didn't know ROSE FUNERAL. Because there might be quite a few people out there not yet familiar with the band, I think giving you an opportunity to introduce yourselves is an appropriate way to start this interview. So please feel free to give us an introduction to ROSE FUNERAL. How old were you when you first got into extreme metal?
We all grew up having influences by deathmetal acts and heavy metal acts such as Cannibal Corpse, At the Gates, Mayhem, Suffocation, Death, and so on... we do (sometimes) on the road throw in a pop punk cd haha, you cant say you don't listen to it!
Explain the name ROSE FUNERAL ?
I just came up with the name Rose Funeral... i wanted something nice yet extreme too... so Rose by the means of melodic and nice to listen to, and Funeral for the Death aspect.
Why Destin Armstrong Changed Position from Bassist to Vocalist??
When we had our original vocalist Ray Hughes he decided to make the leap and head out to the US Marines, so congrats to him on that! Destin took Rays spot for Crucify. Kill. Rot. but now we have a totally new line up.
Tell us about yourselves, what are you like outside of ROSE FUNERAL? You look like a cool bunch of guys to hang out with!
Well shit...We are a loud group of people, we enjoy extremely loud explosives and causing mayhem...Timmy Russel (Vocals) is the ignorant asshole that fucks with people on the road and in malls, you know harassing girls and shit haha... Ryan Neff (Bass) is more laid back and has good ideas... Jesse Beisner (Guitar) is insane, he has ridiculous stories and can cheer anybody up, he is the greatest guy to be around when he is drunk, trust me.. Matt Jambard (Drums) is bipolar, one minute hes nice as fuck.. the next he will threaten to stab you and shit, then me Ryan (Guitar) is more of a watchover on the band to make sure they don't get themselves into a dumbass situation that i have to get them out of violently.
You guys involved in any other projects or bands we would want to know about? Ryan Keep Play on Band Estahlia, Hello From the Stars?
Haha well "Hello From the Stars" i did come up with and i do have GREAT songs for but i left for tour and came back having my band name stolen by the guitar player and started a shitty ass band out of it...I DO plan on returning "Estahlia" but its going to be more hardcore instead of death metal... Me and Jesse are currently working on a Hardcore Cover Band called "Cover the Classic" as well as a new Untitled Pop Punk Band. Our drummer Matt has a Black Metal band called "Morgirion" our of Connecticut.
You are from Cincinnati, Ohio. Cool. My good friends in "Horrid" are from Cincinnati, Ohio as well and you've played shows with them as well as a just recent show . How was ROSE FUNERAL the show?
Well the Cincinnati Ohio scene has definitely calmed down, everyone works and has jobs now...all the good shows take place across the bridge in Covington Kentucky.
Who, or what, are your biggest influences when it comes to writing music? What are your influences? The Black Dahlia Murder, At The Gates, and Prayer for Cleansing keep The Biggest Inspiration for ROSE FUNERAL Musickal??
We were actually labeled with those influences by a reviewer, but other then that we do really like those bands, we all are into groovy notes and catchy tunes, and we try to mix that into a death metal aspect then add crushing breakdowns, the new album is a surprise you will just have to see!
" Crucify.Kill.Rot. " is your First CD album in 2007 . Since I haven't heard the first one (yet), could you tell me a bit about you debut album and the way it differs from " Crucify.Kill.Rot. " ? are You Enjoy deal with Siege of Amida/Candlelight Rec ?? Candlelight as a distribute Only for this CD as well or ... ??
Honestly its terrible... it is NOT Rose Funeral... the album was written 3 years before it was picked up in 06.. so by means it DID NOT show off our talents as musicians, the new album The Resting Sonata for sure does that. SOAR was a smaller based label so they couldn't offer much except Promo and Distro...the only thing we hate is the fact they charge so much fucking money to order a bulk shipment of cds.
What responses did you get from the people, the scene and the zines in the US and the rest of the world on your previous releases?
We had our good ones and of course our bad ones, but people are catching on to the New songs and so far its incredible!! It did hit good across seas though in the U.K. we do have a high demand for tour over there which will be happening in February!
You claim to be influenced by death, black and heavy metal. I can definitely recognise the blackmetal elements, mainly in the fast and aggressive but melodic riffing in the fast parts, and the deathmetal elements are very recognisable in the more angular midtempo parts, Fusing the brutality of modern death metal with melodic hooks that don't leave your mind .Could you tell me a bit more about that and, in general, could you name a few bands, and perhaps some non-musical things (e.g. movies, books, etc) which form your main influences?
We mainly just write what we like...we did take a Dimmu/Cradle of Filth lean towards some parts on the new CD but it fits VERY WELL... as far as books... we just read porn... i mean look at the pictures... and movies, when i was singing i wrote the song God Hand Killer about the movie Frailty...how a man kills for God...i was like Bullshit.. you kill for blood...Which is sweet!!
The songs on " Crucify.Kill.Rot. " are quite long and complex. Could you explain to me how the actual songwriting process takes place within ROSE FUNERAL?
For C.K.R. it was more just piecing together parts we liked, we weren't really a mature band yet, but you will hear the HUGE difference on The Resting Sonata =)
Name 4 bands you would love to share the stage with and Name 3 bands that you dislike
1. At the Gates
2. Dimmu Borgir
3. Black Dahlia Murder
4. Suffocation
Dislikes:
1. Fuck The Devil Wears Prada
2. Fuck Any Grindcore band
3. Fuck Christian Bands that preach 20 minutes at their shows about religion shut the fuck up and play.
Who in the band writes your music? And Name one song you love playing live? Why?
And What was the first concert you went to as a fan?
Me and Jesse do a lot of the writing. Live we love playing our new song God Demise or Redeemer of Flesh...they are soooo freaking catchy and heavy!!... First concert i went to was AC/DC!!!
Who manages the band, who does all the marketing, promoting and who is a lazy bastard?
Our manager is Anthony "Yogi" Allgood he takes care of us! the lazy bastard is our singer Timmy...Tour 1/5 of the time sleep 4/5ths the time.
What is the funniest thing the happened to you while performing? (either to the band or to a band member) Were is the bands favorite place to play?
Well i thought it was great when the band For Today got up on state and preached about how god is doing this and how jesus is doing that... so i said fuck that when we played i introduced our next song ass Sledge Hammer Facelift and it goes out to jesus and how he should be smashed in the fucking face with a sledge hammer.... about 50 Christian kids left. But whatever im not going to a show to hear some kid preach... God didnt give you the talent to be a muscian did... your brains and your fingers did...Fuck we hate Christians. Our best place to play is Skatelands in Westland Michigan!
Tell us of your most memorable show. What bands were playing and why was it memorable for you?
For sure it was Skatelands in Westland Michigan... there was close to 800 kids there... packed... sooo much violence and shit, our good friends in Once We Were Buried played that night!
What advise would you give to someone who want to play extreme metal?
Practice..its not easy in this scene...you can make pure shit sound like even more pure shit... and kids will tear you apart...PRACTICE and dont post videos of you playing/practicing on youtube... if you suck kids will remember that and wont support your band...
Your opinion about Mp3 Trading ?? Now is a Lot of some Blogger ( on web Blog ) Doing that activity. Just Uploading some stuff on sharing provider Hosting, they are Follow it spread the stuff worldwide, are you deal with it?? Give me for your some personal reason.
Well we all do it... but it does suck when your shit gets out early and your not making money...I just hope people will start respecting the bands and at least wait until album drops to start sharing it over the web. Promotion is promotion you know?
And How about Free Media sharing Hosting like as myspace.com, Youtube, etc for Death Metal Movement?
Myspace is HUUUUGE thats where it seems everyone is making their starts nowadays.. It is kinda a cheap way out but hey it helps!
So, you have been on big events in the Deathcore genre, on several big and small festivals. In your opinion, what was your best show, and what the best fest/happening you appeared, and destroyed?
I hate fests.... they are too freaking long and boring...kids get burnt out honestly...no one wants to sit around or pay 20 dollars to see a band they like... all the fests we played have usually been the same...violent yet, but to long!
Do you guys have a hobbies/interests, beside playing Deathcore?
Timmy enjoys sodomizing young girls, Ryan enjoys myspace...way to much, Jesse enjoys smoking alot, Matt enjoys cutting shit apart, and i enjoy waking up the band violently
Your Opinion About " The Booming " Deathcore Music style Now??
Booming? as in bass drops?? i think they are pretty gnarly!
Is there any thing you want our readers to know that I didnt ask you or talk about already?
Dont be scared to come up to us and say hi at a show even if you totally disagree with our lyrics... music is music man! come say hi we appreciate all who enjoy what we do!!!
Any comments or thoughts you would like to express at this time to those reading this?
I am surprised a musician like you reading this is actually READING... who reads anymore!!! shit!! and if you want naked pictures of our singer timmy just ask and i will email them to you to spread throughout the streets.
10 Best stuff for ROSE FUNERAL Lifetime?
im kinda confused on this question..
Memories:
1. Good Mornings: the act of waking up someone violently and screaming Good Morning!!!
2. Timmy getting the double sided dildo stuck up in the ceiling vent at Hot Topic in the mall...
3. The Places we get to stay on tour
4. The beach!!!
5. Jesse making fun of our old bass player dave for being a liar
6. Me beating up that dickhead in New Mexico
7. Chinese food buffets
8. Eating peoples food when they go to sleep
9. Loving Stuff: walking into a Wal-Mart and seeing a bag of food and just destroying and saying I LOVE THIS STUFF at the same time
10 . TACO FUCKING BELL
Are you Know some Indonesian Fucking Metal scene there? Some band / Zine / Label / distro or Individual person?
