SHOT AT DAWN Interview

Shot At Dawn is a 6piece band from Oslo, Norway and the surrounding areas. Starting out with the name Misery Conduct, a band covering Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold and Underoath, the band used the melodic aspects of those bands music, in addition to many other bands influencing the different members, to develop their own style. They classify themselves as a band that plays "blackened melodeathcore". At the start, their lineup was made up of Chris, Ole, Espen and Robin, and after a little while, Mats came in to do vocals, preferring another outlet than drumming, what he does in Mehe. While practicing in Lillestrøm, they occasionally had Erik watching the practices, and after impressing the band with his opera-like vocals during Greyskull, he was added to the lineup, making them a 6piece. A few months later, they played their first live show at the regional finals of UKM. Three months later, they had already played 6 shows, pulling threads and using their contacts to the full extent. For a band only having 4 songs, this is quite impressive. Needless to say, the band wanted to have more songs to play live, but all of a sudden Ole didn't want to play the drums anymore, leaving Mats with the task, and having to teach the drummer all their songs before the next couple of gigs. It all went smoothly, and Mats played his first show on the drums at Åafestivalen in 2006, having only practiced on the drums with the band for 2 days. It took quite some time for the new lineup to settle down, Ole having to learn all the lyrics, which was apparently easier said than done, and Mats having to learn to play the songs by heart. It appeared like things had settled down when they played the first round of Deathmatch, everything going great and people reacting nicely to the band, but come the semi-finals, and everything was a mess. That night was a disaster. Still, with the help of good friends they managed to get the second place and got through to the finals after some harsh reviews from the judges, claiming that they could do so much better. The finals came, Club Maiden was full (and I mean really fucking full), people came by just to give their votes, and at the end of a brilliant set (with new song Enemy Creation), Misery Conduct was pronounced winners with a margin of 10 votes down to second place. Their prize was studiotime for 15.000 NOK, a prize they have now used to record the majority of their debut full length record Sic Vic Pacum Para Bellum. More about that later. Shortly after winning Deathmatch, Mats announced that he would leave the band, citing exhaustion the reason, leaving the band in a position where they needed a thrid drummer in 6 months. Ironically, they knew a guy who was present at their first show with Mats on the drums, and he was up for it. Enter Joakim. Then, in February 2007, Erik quit the band because of musical differences, leaving the band with only one vocalist. The band name was changed to Shot At Dawn, and after one gig with just Ole doing the vocals, Jonathan, the vocalist in now dead Left Among The Living, came in, just in time to do the vocals for the album. During the summer months, not much of interest happened, except for a small label in Bergen wanting to sign the band. Deaf And Blind Records promised to print the cd and take care of some expences, and out of nowhere Shot At Dawn was signed.
Greets, this is Herry SIC doing LOST IN CHAOS Mediazine interview. Great to meet SHOT AT DAWN indeed! You are brutal as fuck!
Hi! Up till quite recently I didn't know SHOT AT DAWN Because there might be quite a few people out there not yet familiar with the band, I think giving you an opportunity to introduce yourselves is an appropriate way to start this interview. So please feel free to give us an introduction to SHOT AT DAWN. How old were you when you first got into extreme metal? We can start with our names and weapons:
Chris - Guitar
Espen - Bass
Jonathan - Vocals
Ole - Vocals
Jonas - Drums
??? - Guitar ( searching for a second guitarplayer )
We are a norwegian metal group, trying to play melodic-blackdeathcoredisco. We have played for about 4 years now and realeased our debut album a few months ago. We were born at the same time just ten years apart. And we have been extreme metallers since then!!!!! Every norwegians are fed with metal from birth, but only 10 % of them manage to not be manipulated by top 20 and all the mainstream shit music floating around like drugs..
Tell us about yourselves, what are you like outside of SHOT AT DAWN ? You look like a cool bunch of guys to hang out with!
We are a cool bunch of guys to hang out with! We love playing sudoku and watch discovery channel and our favourite hobby is to get drunk and fight with foreigners.
You guys involved in any other projects or bands we would want to know about?
Jonas (drummer) is currently playing with death metal band "kraanium" and Chris (guitarplayer) is playing with beatdown hardcore group "Last to remain"
You are from Norway. Cool. good Black metal band in "Horrid" are from Norway as well How was playing this style, i feel Norway is a Country with Familiar most Band Black metal?
Norway is the only real Black metal country, if you are a black metal band outside of Norway, you aren't a real black metal band! hehe.. well not really, but yeah, some of the biggest black metal groups are from Norway. One of our favourite Norwegian black metal band is "Vassengutane" They are so evil that they don't need corpse paint.. They're beyond death!!
Who, or what, are your biggest influences when it comes to writing music? What are your influences?
that is kind of a hard question, we have very different influences. From yngwie malmsteen to necrophagist. We love classic metal, and we love newer bands like: All shall perish, Municipal waste, Darkest Hour etc. Each members have different influences, and we use that to get some variation in our music.
" Sic Vic Pacum Para Bellum " is your First Full CD after Ep Stuff. Since I haven't heard the first one (yet), could you tell me a bit about you debut CD and the way it differs fromfirst Ep ? and how with your new stuff " Sic Vic Pacum Para Bellum ", are you satisfied with that stuff now ??
The Ep SUCKED!!! it was our first time recording, and we didn't know what to do. We wasn't good musicians back then either, so the songs are pretty sloppy, and we are pretty ashamed of it. hehe So this album is a really big step up since the EP. We're satisfied with the album, but then again, it's been over a year since we recorded the album, and it would be much better if we recorded it today.
What responses did you get from the people, the scene and the zines in the Norway and the rest of the world on your previous releases?
We have been very lucky with the response, and haven't got any really bad response on this release. But this kind of metal is not very big in norway so we are trying to get out of this black metal ridden land and get our music out to the rest of the world.
You claim to be influenced by Deathcore. I can definitely recognise Blackened deathcore metal with neoclassical tendencies, and the deathmetal elements are very recognisable in the more angular midtempo parts, but somehow I have difficulty recognising the Death metal influences apart from mainly the Beat. Could you tell me a bit more about that and, in general, could you name a few bands, and perhaps some non-musical things (e.g. movies, books, etc) which form your main influences?
There are many different styles of death metal out there. And it`s the aggressive approach to metal that really inspire us. We know we don`t sound like Cannibal Corpse or Morbid Angel, but they are still an influence. All of us love movies. Everything from horror movies, small independent movies and documentaries. Watching movies is a good way to get inspiration while writing lyrics. We also like old cartoon series like He-Man (listen to our song "Greyskull") Mask, Bravestar, Wheeled Warriors, TMNT ect.......
The songs on " Sic Vic Pacum Para Bellum " are quite long and complex. Could you explain to me how the actual songwriting process takes place within SHOT AT DAWN?
Chris write most of the music and Jonathan writes most of the lyrics. But every one contributes with things of their own to make the songs as good as possible.
Explain the name SHOT AT DAWN ?
During the fighting in Europe against the German Army in WW1, a number of soldiers from the British Army were executed at dawn, they were deserters, or shot for cowardice against their enemy. Special firing squads of 12 were selected to carry out the dreadful order to execute as many as 306, some of them as an individual in these death squads were forced to shoot their best friend. Chris actually got this from a history lesson, maybe the only thing he learned during those 3 years of college.
Name 3 bands you would love to share the stage with and Name 2 bands that you dislike
We would love to play with The black dahlia murder, All shall perish and municipal waste.
We dislike: lillasyster and metallica ( yes, we said it!)
Who in the band writes your music? And Name one song you love playing live? Why? And What was the first concert you went to as a fan?
As we wrote earlier, chris writes most of the music, and jonathan write the lyrics, but each members contribute with their own thing to make the best of the songs. We love playing every song live. There's something about playing live that makes everything great. We get tired of playing the same songs in rehearsal once in a while but playing them live is a whole different thing. Playing shows is what we live for AAaaaaaaaaaaaaarggghh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who manages the band, who does all the marketing, promoting and who is a lazy bastard?
We all try to do our part when it comes to promoting and stuff. But the most handesome boys in the band (Chris and Jonas) is the most active. Our label is a pretty small lable with not much money so we have to do alot ourselves. But we are just waiting for MetalBlade to pick us up.
What is the funniest thing the happened to you while performing? (either to the band or to a band member) Were is the bands favorite place to play?
NOTHING! We are dead serious while performing. Mistakes won`t be tolerated!!!
Our second guitarist had to leave the band because we cut of one finger for each time he fucked up!! We don't care where we play, every stage/venue is our favourite place to play. as long we have a crowd who likes our music and show!
Tell us of your most memorable show. What bands were playing and why was it memorable for you?
Jonas: I haven`t played any show yet.........
The best was when we supported "Fyttihælvettedommer" in Oslo.
Awesome.
What advise would you give to someone who want to play extreme metal?
Try new stuff and try not to get stuck in the past. All the classic bands were the first or pioneèrs of their style.
Your opinion about Mp3 Trading ?? Now is a Lot of some Blogger ( on web Blog ) Doing that activity. Just Uploading some stuff on sharing provider Hosting, they are Follow it spread the stuff worldwide, are you deal with it?? Give me for your some personal reason.
Think the war on Mp3 trading is lost and useless. It`s a great way for unknown bands to get their stuff out but the bigger bands loose alot of money because of this. If people download something then they should buy a bands album if they like it. THats a great way to support a band. These blogs has been a very good thing for us. There are blogs from Russia and other countries that we otherwise wouldn't have gotten our music out to this fast , who has uploaded our album and helped us getting fans. So we are very thankfull for that.
So, you have been on big events in the Deathcore genre, on several big and small festivals. In your opinion, what was your best show, and what the best fest/happening you appeared, and destroyed?
In Norway, this music genre is'nt very big, very few people has even heard of deathcore. So we don't have deathcore festivals and shows here. And since we haven't had the chance to play any festivals outside of norway, we really can't answer this one. Check back in a year or so....
Do you guys have a hobbies/interests, beside playing Deathcore?
We like to drink. And drink some more.
Is there any thing you want our readers to know that I didnt ask you or talk about already?
You can buy our album through myspace : www.myspace.com/shotatdawnmusic
Are you Know some Indonesian Fucking Metal scene there? Some band / Zine / Label / distro or Individual person?
Our drummers other band has some "fans" in Indonesia. But i have a feeling that metalmusic in general is big in Indonesia.
Any comments or thoughts you would like to express at this time to those reading this?
Thanks for taking your time to read this interview about a pretty unknown, but sick ass band. Let us know if we got any fans from indonesia!!
We would also like to thank LOST IN CHAOS Mediazine for this interview!
Your last fucking words for this end interview
LAST FUCKING WORDS!!!!!!!!!!
