INTERVIEW WITH VULTORYON ( Swedia )

answering ByStefan “pizza” Eriksson ( Bass )

In 2005, after having played together in various projects for over ten years, Johan and Crille felt the time was right to give the world a dose of brutal death metal, thus Contortion was formed . The songwriting process started immediately and pretty soon we realized that we had some good shit going on. Consequently, the hunt for bandmembers began. Andreas joined Contortion in late 2005 and with his skill and songwriting contributions the band rose to an even greater level. We rehearsed as a trio for a while after that, developing our sound and had a beer (or ten) inbetween. Soon long time friend Stefan joined and a bass was thereby added to the line up. The last member to enter the band was vocalist Tobias whose brutal vocal style we felt was perfect for Contortion. In the summer of 2006 we decided to enter the studio and record some of our songs. The result, our debut demo Forever Suffer, contains four brutal death metal tracks which we are very proud of. In spring 2007 we inked a deal with OBSCURE DOMAIN productions. In mid 2007 we realized that we had to change the name of the band. This was due to the fact that there are other bands out there named Contortion and we felt that we needed an identity of our own. Thus, Contortion became Volturyon. Soon after that, Tobias decided to leave the band, leaving us without a lead vocalist. However, along came Olle and added his thunderous brutal vocals to our music. It was a match made in Hell. The songs sounded awesome. In October 2007 we entered the studio to record our debut album "Blood Cure". Blood Cure will be released on Obscure Domain Productions on: 31st of January 2008.

Hi, Stefan “pizza” Eriksson, bass-player of Volturyon here. I will do my best to answer your questions.

Hi! Up till quite recently I didn't know VOLTURYON. Because there might be quite a few people out there not yet familiar with the band, I think giving you an opportunity to introduce yourselves is an appropriate way to start this interview. So please feel free to give us an introduction to VOLTURYON. How old were you when you first got into extreme metal?
Well, we’re basicly 5 metalheads who love to play brutal music. Me, Johan and Crille are long time friends who have been playing together in a number of bands over the years. The line up of today consists mainly of former band member in bands we’ve played with over the years. Volturyon is basicly about death metal with a progressive touch but still has some groove and mosh pit friendly parts.
I think most of us have always been listening to hard rock or metal in some form. I didn’t listen to bands like Venom, Metallica and Slayer when I was young, more AC/DC and such bands. For me the extreme metal got into my world as the different styles developed. Lots of shit has been released through the years, but when good music/bands started to show up I got into it. I think it goes for everyone in the band.

Explain the name VOLTURYON? why Name CONTORTION Changed as VOLTURYON?
We found out that the name Contortion was taken by another band (there must be 1000 bands called contortion out there) and they simply got in contact with us asking us to change it, so after some thinking we came up with the name Volturyon.

Christian "Crille" Netzell Is a Talent Drummer, I Very Like with his style, Crille now keep active on IN MOURNING, But Honesty, Christian "Crille" Netzell More Talented play With VOLTURYON Than IN MOURNING. are you Deal with my statement?
Hi Herry. Crille from Volturyon here.
Thanks for the complements and for supporting Volturyon! I think being active in two different Deathmetal bands suits me perfectly because of their variety in style.
In Volturyon I can really develop my technical and fast playing style. With In Mourning I have more room for improvisation in the music and that´s more or less as challenging.

Tell us about yourselves, what are you like outside of VOLTURYON? You look like a cool bunch of guys to hang out with!
Hehe, well, cool and cool. We’re regular guys. Like most metalheads we like to party when we can. We all have jobs so Volturyon is unfortunately, so far, just something we can do on our spare time. Andreas is working manufacturing mining gear. Crille is a newspaper delivery man, Johan runs his own company making subtitles for tv series and movies, Olle works as an aid for mentally and physically disabled and I mainly work with building stages

You guys involved in any other projects or bands we would want to know about? all member keep on Band Evangeli, Magog, Pergolos, Hartwig, Död, Hell Patrol, Cryonic Temple and In Mourning?
To sort things out, Evangeli and Magog is the same band and was put to rest in early 2007, in that band it was Andreas, Johan and me.
Pergolos is on ice as well, we’ll see what happens with it in the future, Olle handled the drums in that band, by the way.
Hartwig is no more, Olle did the drums in that band.
Död is Olles black metal project where he did the vocals, status unknown.
Hell Patrol is active and about to record a full length album. I have been in that band since the early days. Crille was in the band for about a year.
Cryonic Temple was a band I was involved with, but I quit because I didn’t have enough time to be in so many bands on an album level. They’ve just finished recording their 4th album.
In Mourning is Crilles other band, they are doing very well and have just been to Latvia, doing a festival with Cradle Of Filth, among others.

You are from Borlänge, Swedia. Cool. My good friends in "Horrid" are from Swedia as well and you've played shows with them as well as a just recent show with Spawn Of Possession, Visceral Bleeding, Insision, etc . How was the show?
There I think you are mistaken, we can’t remember having ever played with Horrid. However we’d like to play with them as well as with Spawn Of Possession, Viceral Bleeding, Insision and such. I’m sure that’d be an AWESOME show!!! :D

Who, or what, are your biggest influences when it comes to writing music? What are your influences?
There’s a lot of shit going on in this world today, so there’s no shortage of inspiration. We gather influences from everything that’s affecting us, and then maybe make it a bit more extreme.

" Blood Cure " is your second album. Since I haven't heard the first one (yet), could you tell me a bit about you debut album and the way it differs from " Blood Cure " ? are you enjoy work with Obscure Domain Productions?
The first one you refer to I think is our demo that got us the deal with Obscure Domain. It’s a 4 track thing, and all the songs on it later ended up on “Blood Cure”, re-recorded of course. We had a different singer on that one. Tobbe, Crilles brother and singer of In Mourning. Obscure gave us the conditions we were looking for with “Blood Cure”, being a small label but fully dedicated to death metal. We felt there was no bullshit business standing in the way for straight communication.

What responses did you get from the people, the scene and the zines in the US and the rest of the world on your previous releases?
As “Blood Cure” is our first real release I can only refer to that. It’s been mostly good, and those who have doubts we convince by playing live, hehe. No but seriously, it’s hard to say. Of course there’s always good and bad response, but out of 20 rewievs or so, maybe 1 or 2 isn’t a 8 of 10, so I guess that is a good sign, but it’s weird to comment on someone elses judgement of our music. Of course they have a right to their opinion, so we can only accept it and do what we do. The US has so far been mostly out of reach for us, it requires a different type of support from label, marketing and such. We have got a lot of comments from people in the US on our homepage and they’ve been positive. So hopefully in the future I can tell you more about the US part.

You claim to be influenced by death, black and Thrashmetal ( Especially Swedish Sound scene ). I can definitely recognise the blackmetal elements, mainly in the fast and aggressive Shreed riffing in the fast parts, and the New School deathmetal elements are very recognisable in the more angular midtempo parts, Could you tell me a bit more about that and, in general, could you name a few bands, and perhaps some non-musical things (e.g. movies, books, etc) which form your main influences?
Describing our own music is difficult. We don’t think in genres or anything when we write songs and riffs. We simply put together what we think sounds cool. But since many of us have been around for a long time and experienced new styles come and go, of course we incorporate some elements of things we like into our writing unconsciously. I don’t think there are any specific bands that are more of a main influence as each one of us has a long history in listening to metal. I adore Slayer and Devin Townsend for example, but it doesen’t mean that it is reflected in what I do with Volturyon or any other music I make. I think for me what make them influences is the feel they generate. Listen to reign in blood and you realize that together with Rick Rubin they accomplished something that’s greater than just the notes they play, it’s all elements interacting. Devin Townsend to me is great because of his way of showing the finger to everything that includes standard thinking. For example, how a song is structured or what instrument that should be involved in what music, as Zappa once did. This is MY own influences, if you’d ask anyone else in the band they’d name theirs. But I think that bands that deliver that “AAAAH; SHIIIT THIS IS BACKBONE-WRECKING KICK ASS!!!!” feeling when you listen to it, that’s what we’re going for in our music, to experience that feeling.

The songs on " Blood Cure " are quite long and complex. Could you explain to me how the actual songwriting process takes place within VOLTURYON? Are you Satisfied work this material with Jonas Kjellgren & Nickals Lindh at Black Lounge Studio? Equipment use during Recording for " Blood Cure " Material??
It’s mostly Johan, Andreas and Crille who write the songs. Johan & Andreas come up with the riffs and then they start to build up the song part by part, then we record it. It normally takes a couple of changes before we’re satisfied with the song. I do my things last when it’s all set. Playing guitarbased music, it’s the easiest way so I don’t get in the way with all the bass player talk. What sounds good on bass normally sounds weird on guitar. But we all have one 5th in the band so no one is excluded from having the right to be involved in the process.

Name 4 bands you would love to share the stage with and Name 3 bands that you dislike
-Slayer, just for the sake of it! Hmm, Cannibal Corpse, also for the sake of it, Dying Fetus maybe. Last one…At the gates, because we played alongside them on this years Sweden rock festival.
It’s hard to mention 3 bands that we dislike as a group. I have come to respect every band, artist or genre for what they do, even if it’s not my cup of tea. But I think that every band with a bad attitude towards other fellowmusicians/bands and fans are on that top 3 list. They’ve lost their reason and their gratitude to those who put them there in the first place.

Who in the band writes your music? And Name one song you love playing live? Why?
And What was the first concert you went to as a fan?
As I mentioned earlier, Johan, Crille & Andreas write the music, Olle is the main man behind the lyrics. I love playing “Initiate the Killing” just cause it’s a bit different compared to the other songs.
I don’t remember what my first concert was, but it must’ve been back in the 80’s sometime.

Who manages the band, who does all the marketing, promoting and who is a lazy bastard?
We are priviliged with that. No one is a lazy bastard actually. We all take care of different parts. Mostly it’s me who co-ordinates and give the others their tasks, but we already have different areas of responsibility.

What is the funniest thing the happened to you while performing? (either to the band or to a band member) Were is the bands favorite place to play?
With this band, maybe the funniest and worst thing so far was our concert at Gothenburg deathfest back in October 2007. We had just finished recording “Blood Cure” and were not ready for playing the songs live. With all the small changes we made in the studio, we all felt a bit insecure. So we started playing and in “Unorthodox Spawn Deleted”, think, Johans guitar went dead and it left me and andreas like 2 question marks, playing randomly until we managed to get back in the song. It was a killer but still, something good came out of it. We started to rehearse like hell with focus on improving our performance on stage. Besides that, Olles hair got stuck in the tuning thingies on my bass at our release party gig, and he just ripped t off, so I played the set with a furball on the top of my bass, thinking Olle just got bald! :D
We like to play wherever there’s a crowd willing to kick ass with us!

Tell us of your most memorable show. What bands were playing and why was it memorable for you?
Sweden rock festival this year, no doubt! It was memorable cause it’s the biggest festival in Sweden (pulling a 33 000 crowd), the weather was awesome, the gig went nice and we got nice response. We got to play with bands like At The gates, Carcass and Testament among many many others.

What advise would you give to someone who want to play extreme metal?
Just do it, there are no rules. As long as you stay true to yourself you can be the best or the worst band ever. It will show when you play if it’s done with dedication and honesty!

Your opinion about Mp3 Trading ?? Now is a Lot of some Blogger ( on web Blog ) Doing that activity. Just Uploading some stuff on sharing provider Hosting, they are Follow it spread the stuff worldwide, are you deal with it?? Give me for your some personal reason.
Well, you cant stop evolution, and I think this is similar to tape trading back in the days but in a way larger scale. And for us, it’s the reason why we speak to you now, so why say it’s bad. But I can understand that people who put shitloads of money and effort into things can get pissed, but well, you can’t “beam” yourself into a concert, so I think it’s just that the way music has been spread in the past is just that, a thing of the past. This is the reality of today, might as well embrace it and use it to spread your music and make people come see your shows, buy merch and support the underground. If you know how to use the web for your purposes, there’s no limit You got to have the basics, though: good music.

And How about Free Media sharing Hosting like as myspace.com, Youtube, etc for Death Metal Movement?
Look at our myspace-page, we have our music there. We have links to youtube with livesongs from concerts that we put down a lot of time, money and effort into. We love music, we’re not trying to exploit it! And for death metal and other narrow genres, it is the best thing since portable studios! :D

So, you have been on big events in the Death Metal genre, on several big and small festivals. In your opinion, what was your best show, and what the best fest/happening you appeared, and destroyed?
Sweden rock as mentioned! But hopefully we’ll surpass that in a not to distant future!

Do you guys have a hobbies/interests, beside playing deathmetal?
Yep, Andreas likes to take photographs, among others things, Olle & Crille likes to gym, Johan is into anime (Japanese animation) and video games, and I do a little bit of everything. But honestly, we spend most of our time with music in some form.

Is there any thing you want our readers to know that I didnt ask you or talk about already?
Don’t know, ask them, hehe. Well, maybe that we’re planning on making a dvd with the entire concert that’s on youtube. It will be like an unofficial live thing. It doesn’t have the sound quality that you’re used to having on live dvds these days, but this is the actual thing. The sound comes directly from the cams and we didn’t have like 20 cams located everywhere, but it is very good for what it is. It’s the raw experience. When it comes to live performances we’ll head out on a short tour in the UK this November, and we’re planning an European tour this fall.

Any comments or thoughts you would like to express at this time to those reading this?
Well, I think we’ve covered it all!

10 Best Stuff For VOLTURYON For Lifetime!!

- a tourbus that you actually can survive in
