Interview Bareng DEVIANT ( Swedia )

DEVIANT Interview ( taken from LIC # 17 Issue )
Answering by Johan ( guitars )

Johan, please Introduce your History band to me and LOST IN CHAOS reader ( Sorry Still with Boring and bastard Question as Fuck! ), the name DEVIANT, who came up with that and seriously, whats the Meaning behing a name like that? I mean Now a days people coming up with some of the Freak and craziest names out there and what I would like to know is who came up with it and why? Whats the deal with it? Easy remember or was it just to fit Your brutal nature?
We started out in 2002 and needed a name before playing our first show, so Magnus and EB came up with it. We thought it was fine and it separated us from the usual bands with gore-bwootthurl-argghh names. It's easy to remember too. We're right now working hard on our debut fullength at EAR Studios. It will be entitled "Larvaeon" and probably be out around March 2005.

How did you get signed with THE SPEWRecords? Are they doing a good Job with Promoting your name in the underground scene now that it’s a pretty tough business? Are you know more about person inside label as well??
Giorgio at The Spew contacted us after hearing the mp3s we put on the site after recording the demo. He really liked those, so we sent him a copy of the demo. He liked it and offered us a deal, which we accepted. He's doing a great job with promoting us and spreading our name, he's really dedicated and a really nice bloke.

DEVIANT has been the release CD “ Deviant “ I stumbled upon, it’s a great CD I have to say But have you done any recording before this? and what equipment to use for this recording??
The "Deviant"-demo ('03) was what got us signed to The Spew, and also got us some offers from other labels. We did a rehearsal tape before that, but it ain't worth having. I think there's just like 10 copies out or something like that. We recorded the demo with our usual gear at EAR Studios, Ibanez guitars through a Peavey 5150 II, Tama drums...

Tell me about Split album with PENILE SUFFOCATION, how about comment for this band? Are you know members as well??
That was something we were planning on doing before the album, but we threw it in the bin to be able to fully concentrate on writing and recording the album. But who know? Maybe we'll do it in the future. We're good friends with him.

what inspires you when you guys rite your Music? How is the Process when writing music for DEVIANT , are still deal with CRYPTOPSY and some INGROWING rule as well? Can you tell me behind this?
We start off with an idea, be it on the intro, song structure or just some part of a song, and work from there. I usually bring riffs and we throw them around until we get where we want to with the song. Cryptopsy is a big influence, mainly on arrangements and drumming. I don't know about Ingrowing... We listen to pretty much all kinds of music, and we get insipration from almost anything.

a lot Amazing drummer uses axis pedals, don’t you interest to try it too? Is it chep to buy the gears on your Country??
EB plays Iron Cobra pedals and he's happy with them. He was interested in getting some Axis longboards but I think he's staying with the Iron Cobras for a while. Equipment is cheaper in, say the US, than it is here, that's for sure.

Since DEVIANT Seems to be Pretty Much into Brutal death/grind style, I feel your lyrics content about nature freaky, alright? How Important do you think it is, not only for your self, but also for other bands in this genre, to have topics that contain in DEVIANT and what do you think about bands in the same genre that Doesn’t have lyric about nature freaky? Can you give me some opinion about it??
Well, we don't write our own lyrics, and we don't care that much. We bring our own songtitles to the table, but we have other people writing the lyrics for us. Lyrics on the album have been written by Uffe (Cranial Devourment/ex-Stabwound) and Adam Conrad, except for one song. We wrote "Crucifiend" on our own, something we probably won't be doing again. As far as lyrics goes, we don't feel they are that important. You can't hear what's being sung anyway.

When will the time come, when you will be able for next release, has that been planned yet and do you have enough material for it, and DEVIANT??
We're working on the next release, right now, in the studio. It's a fullength album entitled "Larvaeon" and it will probably be out early next year. It contains nine songs, with two songs from the demo re-recorded ("Tools of Termination" and "Deviant Ways", now renamed "Deviance").

Are you only into listening to brutal music or do listen to any other kind of genre only?? What do is your opinion about being open minded when it comes to your music? And what heve you been listening to the most lately??
Nah, we listen to a lot of different kinds of music. It's pretty important to do if you don't want to get tired of what you're hearing. Lately, we've been digging the usual stuff; Immolation, Aborted, Nasum, Cryptopsy and Queen of course.

Throught the years that this music has been spawned in all kinds of shapes and sounds, how do you think the death metal scene ( Worldwide ) will look in the, well lets say for 5 years to coming up soon? Doesn’t it have any chance to survive or is it slowly withering away??
It will always exist, of that I'm sure, but in which shape and which sound, I don't really know. I guess some will evolve and maybe start a new kind of death metal and some will stay and play it the "old" way. I guess we'll see in 5 years. We'll probably be around, that's for sure.

Well, now for some more potential matter, how did you get into this kind, at first and what bands have meant a lot to you when it comes to this kind of music, like what bands did your grow up with??
Me and Magnus started out with listening to Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Slayer and Iron Maiden when we were aruond 9 or 10. We eventually got into more extreme stuff and brought EB along. Alex, I don't really know haha. Important bands have always been, apart from the already mentioned: Queen, Dismember, Entombed, Deicide (first three/four), Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy, Dissection.

When it comes to music in general are you a close minded person or an open minded person. Don’t worry, I wont judge you for what answer you pick!
We're all pretty open minded. If we like something, we'll listen to it. If we don't, we wont. Simple! haha.. Magnus is into NWA.

besides playing in DEVIANT, what Does apart member here do for a living( Hobbies, work, Other band Project, are you married or still studently, etc )??
Right now, we're just 19 years old. Alex (singer) works as a chef, EB (drummer) is looking for a new job. Me and Magnus are both studying at university.

and in the Future, whats the plans for DEVIANT??
First and foremost, complete the recording and everything else that comes with the album, then go out and play live. We have had a break from playing shows for almost six months, since we've focused on writing the new album, but we're soon out again to destroy some stages!

Are you Know about Indonesian underground Movement as well?? Are you contact with some Individual, band, label, zine, distro and other as a way? And if you know much, what your opinion for my Country to day ( Politic condition, culture, etc )??
Can't say I know much about the Indonesian underground movement. I don't know that much about your country either, apart from the news that reach Swedish shores too. I've been to Malaysia, I think that's the closest I've been :). I'd like to travel down there sometime.

that about wraps it up, I would like to thank you for giving me the chance to Interview and your band, I would also like to add that you have my infinite support. Is there anything you would like to add?? Anyshout-out, how to get in touch, etc?? thanxs!!!
