Interview With PROVOCATION ( Bayern, Germany )

Update 18-01-2009 Interview By Herry SIC

After rehearsing and jamming around for months, the original members Sascha K. (guitar) and Philipp B. (drums) founded the band PROVOCATION in 2004. Soon the bassplayer Nasar S. joined the band. With Steffen J. the second guitarplayer was found to fit in. Last but not least Bastian J. took over the vocalpart. With this line-up PROVOCATION did their live debut in december 2004. Several gigs should follow over the years. PROVOCATION shared the stage with well-known bands like DEFEATED SANITY, NAPALM DEATH, INFECTED MALIGNITY, NECROPHAGIST, FLESHLESS, DEADBORN, ROMPEPROP, PROSTITUTE DISFIGUREMENT, JIG-AI, PIGSTY, PUNGENT STENCH, BLOOD DUSTER, ARSEBREED, VOMIT THE SOUL, IMPURE and many more. In the beginning the band used to play a mix of Mid-Tempo Death and Thrash Metal provided with many melodic and grind parts. Over the months the style evolved and the music became more brutal. Of course the speed has risen dramatically. But the lyrical range is still constant. In their lyrics the band works through political and sociocritical issues. In summer/fall 2006 Steffen J. (guitar) left the band due to personal reasons. He got fully replaced by Manuel C. (guitar). Meanwhile the band played Technichal Brutal Death Metal. The musical influences of Manuel C. (guitar) should attract attention to themselves soon. The style became less technical but more catchy and even more brutal. Henceforth the band plays Brutal Death Metal. Nasar S. (bass) and Sascha K. (guitar) left the band due to personal and job-related reasons in fall 2007. In fall 2007 Daniel E. joined the band as a bassist. In March 2008 PROVOCATION joined the MUTILATED RECORDS family!

Interview Answered By Bastian ( Vocal )

Hello! First, so who is currently situated in the PROVOCATION camp?
Hey Herry, how are you doing? Everything is pretty fine here. The actual members of Provocation are Daniel (bass), Manuel (guitar), Philipp (drums) and me - Bastian (vocals).

First time, congratulation for new Cd has be released for Now, and How have people reacted to " Towards Total Annihilation ", and what is the band doing now? are you satisfied with Great Job with your label Mutilated Records ( Hello Diego !! . ed ) , that label doing some Great Job for PROVOCATION ?
We got great response from all over the world. Just try to google our CD and you will find many download platforms and peer-to-peer programs sharing our CD. This is kinda good promotion for us and our CD. The guys from Hack Movies ( www.hackmovies.com ) used our music in their newest trailer & movie. Also our myspace ( www.myspace.com/provocationbrutaldeath ) is higher frequented since the release. Actually we are writing some new stuff which we are going to release in the form of a promo CD in 2009. We are sure that the new stuff will kick some asses. Don´t miss it and check our myspace from time to time. Diego is a very nice guy and MUTILATED REC. is a very solid and good-working label. Diego means a lot to us. His work and commitment is very appreciated by all bandmembers.

It seems like the debut new CD “Towards Total Annihilation ” on 2008 has been received rather well. What was the best review you’ve had and which one was the worst?
I haven´t read a review yet. Are there any?

"Towards Total Annihilation " is PROVOCATION most dramatic and dynamically aggressive Brutal Death metal release thus far, concentrating heavily on creating memorable hooks within a very song-orientated framework. Can you tell me how you approached the song writing this time around and how this process different from your previous Music concept ?
The songs on “Towards Total Annihilation” were mainly written in the last two to three years. You may will hear style changes between some songs. The main difference in the songwriting process is due to our guitarist Manuel who joined Provocation in 2007. His brutal guitar sound and song ideas brought our style to the next level. But the other members also influenced the new sound. Our drummer Philipp is a genius concerning the placing of catchy beatdowns and grooves. Daniel our bassist is a freaky fretboard tornado. He evolves insane speedriffs and blastparts. And I, for my share, have some ideas every now and then.

How Compared "Towards Total Annihilation" with Older Concept stuff ?
We used to play a mix of Death Metal, Thrash Metal and Grindcore in the early years. The style changed bit by bit into Technical Death and finally Brutal Death.

give way to a much more Gory Dark evil and bombastic PROVOCATION than ever. How much of a part do classical composers play in terms of influencing the way you create your music?
Depends on what you mean with classical composers. Our bassist, as far as i know, is listening to many stuff. In his private rehearsals he listens to the music of composers like Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Our guitarist Manuel also has to play some classical stuff, due to he is taking professional guitar lessons. Philipp enjoys technical Jazz drumming which influences him in many ways. But we are also influenced by bands like Pyaemia, Disavowed, Degrade, Dying Fetus, Guttural Secrete and many more.

Production-wise Towards Total Annihilation " is undoubtedly the most brutal-sounding PROVOCATION please to date yet still manages to harness a clarity that enables all the twin leads and intricacies to shine through in all their Raw Intense . What were your initial ideas of how you wanted this album to sound before you went into the studio ?
We wanted to create a clear but realistic sound. The balance between all instruments and vocals should be sane and we think that the result is quite good. Most musicians find faults after all the work is done or may locate some points which could have been done better and so do we. In the end we are satisfied with the results.

Did anything unusual and/or spectacular happen when during Records? You tired yet of the comments about the drums’ and Guitar Duties placement in the final mix? Did you have the final call on the final mix?
Good question. I, for my part, cannot remember any unusual or special moment. Stefan the producer ( www.soundartdesign.de ) created the sound for more than 50%.

All this time, you've been touring and sharing the stage with several great bands, too. Which bands did you like best touring with? Which of all your tours is the most unforgettable? Could you share to us some of your best and worst touring experiences?
Until now we haven´t played a full tour yet. We did kinda weekend-tours. Napalm Death and Born From Pain were, although they´re quite famous, very communicative. I remember some funny moments. For example a gig in Berlin with Defeated Sanity (cheers to you sickos!), Sanatorium and our brothers of Deadborn and By Brute Force (you rule!). The show was a fucking blast and we had some drinks (fucking “mexicans”) after the show, fooling around. One day later in Prague we met a funny guy. It turned out that he produces porno movies in Los Angeles and we had many funny conversations. Another funny gig was the show in the Netherlands at Houten Deathfest. We met great bands there. Begging For Incest and Darkall Slaves (wassup Moots??) are nice and funny journeymen. The worst experience was the almost split-up of Provocation on a show in 2005. But that chapter is closed since a long time.

What would be the ultimate Brutal death metal package be for you to either be part of or to attend? The billing can have up to 10 bands :-)
That is a brutal question... I try to speak for my bandmates:
Abominable Putridity, Rest In Gore, Waking The Cadaver, Devourment, Heinous Killings, Guttural Secrete, Vital Remains, Sleep Terror, Nile and of course Provocation, hehe.

How are Death metal Movement on Miltenberg, Bavaria, Germany scene ?? keepin killer with have more horrify band there ?? How about High recommend for new comer band from this scene ??
The scene here is pretty small and very Hardcore/Metalcore-influenced. We have some great bands in our nearer area. Take some time and have a shot at bands like Retaliation, Incesticide, Fuck Your Shadow From Behind and Betrayal.

simple Question with your Opinion :
- How fuckin Kickin Riffing : Diego Sanchez of Disgorge or Jeremy Of Origin sound or Jesse Pindato ( RIP ) of Terrorizer / Napalm Death / lock Up ?
God... That is difficult. I would hardly say Diego Sanchez.
- How fuckin Intense drumming Skill and powerfully : Ricky Myers of Disgorge or John Longstreth ORIGIN ??
Are you trying to kill me?? Both are gods! I give that point to John.
- How fuckin Great Growling Vokill : Matti ways of Ex. Disgorge or Levi of Disgorge or Ruben of Devourment ??
Matti Way.
- How fuckin 4 string hell??
Jacob from Defeated Sanity is a badass!

Are you Know name PROVOCATION From Marl ??
That is a funny story. We haven´t heard from the “old” Provocation. I went on a Suffocate Bastard / Despondency concert in Kassel, Germany in 2005 as Suffocate Bastard weren´t well known yet. On that concert some guy told me that the actual drummer of Suffocate Bastard (Thorsten) used to play drums in Provocation from Marl. After that i surfed the web for the keyword PROVOCATION and it turned out (as you may imagine) that there are so many bands named Provocation. So what.

Any Future next Plan soon PROVOCATION ??
We try to get some cool gigs for this year. We also want to write some more songs. And we want to take the next step – our secound full-length album 2009/2010.

Thanks a ton, guys! Last question, and this one is a doozy. What are your views on stem cell research, human cloning, and the "organic computers" that are sure to result from combining "flesh" with "technology"? Flying cars are quickly becoming a reality as well, what do you think of them?
Well, it´s just a matter of time. This stuff will bring many, many risks. But we better (and we will) learn to deal with it. It will come for sure.

Well, this Fuckin interviews can be very nice too and on that note I’ll conclude this one. Thanks for doing this little digital tea chat Mail and let’s hope our webzine will still be around for whatever next band release you’ll be on haha. keep existing for extreme metal flames forever !!
Thank for letting us participate. All the best for you and your zine. Keep up the brutality!
