Interview With NO EMOTIONS ( Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine )

Update 27-02-2009 Interview By Herry SIC
Answered By Sirius - Guitars

Last several years there is a tendency in extreme genre to value bands by quantity of beats per minute. Having their own idea and vision on extreme music NoEmotions doesn’t belong to huge amount of classicist imitators and don’t assign the primary importance to tempo click speed index. Along with high-quality release, it’s undeniable fact that music propose you to dip into profound ocean of non-standard extreme-metal. If you wait from these conquerors trite riffs, hackneyed melodies and vocal patterns like flushing tank you’ll be disappointed because this music really grabs with its freshness. Atypical melodies, ragged and turning inside out riffs, hurricane drums, non-standard songs structure…… all that what is able to dispel the stench of death-metal commonness before the eyes of an experienced audience and attract new blood. NoEmotions started as Hyperion in 2002. Within next 3 years of activity band rose from local status and became a well-known and respected metal act in Ukraine. After thousand kilometers of several tours across CIS-countries (Ukraine, Belarus, Russia) now it’s time to spread pure Will on the other territories

Hello! First, so who is currently situated in the NO EMOTIONS camp?
Hails! You mean our line up? Now we are 3-piece band + session bassplayer

First time, congratulation for new Cd has be released for Now, and How have people reacted to " My Will ", and what is the band doing now? are you satisfied with Great Job with Mystic Empire, that label doing some Great Job for NO EMOTIONS ? so far concerning promotion (ads, interviews), CD packaging and so on?
To tell the truth “My Will” was released almost year ago, well, people react very well, we haven’t had any negative feedback, seems to me people really like our extreme metal invasion. Yes, we are satisfied with Mazzar/Mystic Empire though there is lots of work to be done but we are not home guys who wait blessing from the heaven. We have huge plans for this year and I hope Mazzar will help us in right way.

How would you compare " My Will " to your previous releases ? Was the final product exactly as you had in mind? What's new in this album in terms of production and composition? What feedback are you getting so far ?
Before “My Will” we recorded “Through centuries” under Hyperion name which was released by DeathGasm records. We changed the name on NoEmotions 2 years ago before”My Will” release. I was keeping in mind name “NoEmotions” many years but time has come not that day. To compare our releases you should listen to them first. I like very much “Through Centuries” though production as for me not so good as I want, who knows, probably we’ll rerecord it within next few years. As for “My Will” production of album is good, yes, musicians always try to find something which should be done in the other way but that’s reason to progress. I satisfied with music material anyway. On “TC” we played something like mix between death & black, I just refer on styles of metal to help you understand the whole picture, “My Will” really differ, more extreme and has the other approach to melodic line. Feedback also is very different ‘cause if you are new to the scene you should expect comparisons with veterans

Now that the album is out in the market, what's the next thing you have in mind? Are there major concerts to look forward to, or probably, a follow-up release? It seems like the debut new CD “My Will ” on 2008 has been received rather well. What was the best review you’ve had and which one was the worst?
I suppose we’ll have few tours in near future, we did 2 tours supporting our release in Belarus & Russia, so we have plans as for our native country, Russia as well as eastern Europe. I think the best reviews were on metal-archives and the worst… I don’t remember… it was like music is good but lyrics are so simple… something like that

Why This album has only been released in Russia, whats Band has Find Label/Distribution For now to internationally Release " My will " Cd ??
“Cause ex-USSR countries, I mean Ukraine, Russia, Belarus etc are the big markets for us, we live there and have our fanbase. Sure we don’t limit ourselves trying to spread our music worldwide. We received few mails from such companies like Metal Blade, Century Media, it was like “you have very good stuff but today we have to concentrate on other type of music”. I can understand their position, probably they fear our origin etc. but we’ll strive anyway to get good deal. I suppose if you play in extreme metal band you should work hard and take care about management too.

How did the recording process go? Did anything unusual and/or spectacular happen? You tired yet of the comments about the drums’ placement in the final mix? Did you have the final call on the final mix?
Now, looking back on april 2006 I should say that it was even stress for us, I suppose when you are hurry it’s not always good for recording process, I mean we knew what we have to record but we didn’t aware how we should it record. That’s why I remember amps changing, vocals recording problems etc. But anyway we did good job, we have good album with good sound and I hope that the next album will be recorded better. Today there is a lot of shitty sound, triggers, guitars reamping… it’s not natural, it’s just tricks for young kids. I prefer natural sound, I should mention Terrorizer “World Downfall”, Kataklysm “Temple…”, Dying Fetus “Destroy the Oposition”, these are good example of albums which you want to listen more and more, feeling it’s live atmosphere, enjoying the drummer playing. So we work on our skills and I think we’ll use that approach to record our next album. And don’t tell me that drummer needs to use triggers when he plays over 240 bpm. First you have to play clearly and should have good sound, balanced sound. When I listen to that blast I usually can hear only the bass drums and cymbal, and usually blastbeat is played by two feets… So guys, you should take triggers only on the road if you are good drummers.

Also, do you guys write more song material than you eventually use on the albums/Demos or do you only write a certain number of songs and refine them until you’re all satisfied with them? Furthermore, since you tour so much: does most of the song writing happen on the road or do you guys really jump into the rehearsal room and jam?
I always come with ideas in rehearsing room, usually I have vision on drums parts which suit for riffs I wrote. I like improvisation and sometimes you can catch really good ideas. I try to write brilliant songs which really satisfy me, sometimes you need 2 days to complete the songs in general way, sometimes you collect riffs for years. I remember story of title song, I composed few riffs and didn’t know how the theme will develop. We played 2 first riffs and then just stopped. Suddenly Max touch the china and I got idea and we immediately composed half of the song. And again… what will be the continuation? I have been thinking about it probably half of the year. I can get the idea anytime and anywhere, I can write the riffs in my head and then just take guitar and play it.

Often musicians have their pet songs or own fave tunes on their albums. What song(s) on “My Will” are your favorite tracks?
I like the whole album that’s why I think it’s question to our fans.

With a decade of existence, how do you see NO EMOTIONS in the years to come? Would there be any possibility of a genre shift? Please tell us more of your future plans.
Decade? No men, we are not so old, heh . To tell the truth I don’t keep in mind our age, I only think about progress and I will do everything to play more tours, to record music which I want to record. NoEmotions is not orthodox death-metal band, we play extreme music first, we like that kind of music. But I compose my own songs based on my imagination and willing to create. So, you should expect from us extreme metal but in our unique way. Future plans… touring, touring, touring, composing, recording, touring, touring, touring, composing, recording…

How long do you think you guys can keep this intensive touring up? It’s interesting that so many of the old metal bands are still touring frequently and often headlining festivals while they obviously can’t match their old quality level. The only exception seems to be Iron Maiden but bands like Metallica, Judas Priest (Rob needs to stop trying to sing!), Slayer are way past their prime yet still draw huge crowds. What I’m aiming at here is how long do you think NO EMOTIONS can keep playing and releasing albums without becoming a parody of some kind?
Time will tell, as longer as we can. Music is passion. We didn’t tour so much that’s why aim to tour more and more to live from music.

All this time, you've been touring and sharing the stage with several great bands, too. Which bands did you like best touring with? Which of all your tours is the most unforgettable? Could you share to us some of your best and worst touring experiences?
Basically we toured with bands that have professional attitude, all tours were pleasant things for me personally. If you are going on tour you just need to rid of shi off your head and think about upcoming gigs and your fans.

Which of all your albums is your favorite, and if any, which one do you like least? Could you also name at least five of your favorite albums of all time?
You mean favorite bands albums? To tell the truth it’s too complex to name only 5. Ok, let’s speak about old bands:

Metallica 84-86
Megadeth 86-88
Slayer 86-90
Kreator 89
Sepultura 91

How are Death metal Movement on Ukraine scene for Now ?? keepin killer with have more horrify band there ?? How about High recommend for new comer band from Ukraine scene to day and future ??
We have a few good bands there but I’m not o much in native scene, I like Mental Demise promo 2003 but their “Disgrasefull…” is really shit. Also almost 10 years ago there was Inner Cell band, I like their “Meditation and pain” album but it’s not actually pure death-metal, something like Pantera, Meshuggah and own ideas.

Of the emerging bands today playing similar craft as NO EMOTIONS, which ones do you like best and who would be your top pick to do a cover of one of your songs? Which bands do you think will make it big one of these days? Would you like to share any advice to them?
You know, we just guys who like extreme stuff, we play music we want, we are not veterans, especially when it comes with cover on our songs. If someone like our songs, if someone would like to do cover on “My Will” songs just they would do it.

Well, this Fuckin interviews can be very nice too and on that note I’ll conclude this one. Thanks for doing this little digital tea chat Mail and let’s hope our webzine will still be around for whatever next band release you’ll be on haha. keep existing for extreme metal flames forever !!
Thank you for the interest, will work hard to conquer!!! See ya later!
