Interview With HAPPY FACE ( France )

Update 28-12-2008 By Herry SIC
Interview Answered By Gui ( Vocals )

Happy Face began life in February 2002 when long time friends Julien and David got together to create technical and chaotic grindcore. Initially with Julien on drums and electronics and David on guitar, the line-up was completed by Gilles and Greg, providing vocals and bass respectively. The band recorded their first demo in 2002 titled ‘Histoire sans Paroles’, blasting through twelve tracks in no more than fifteen minutes. The demo received great reviews and showed a band overflowing with potential. Happy Face quickly gained a strong reputation on the French underground scene following a series of fierce live performances, and recorded their second demo ‘Tah!!!’ which was met with acclaim, even gaining them a host of fans as far spread as Japan. Rather than just being a typical deathgrind band, Happy Face draw together a range of aggressive styles. With grindcore, hardcore and death metal merged with a variety of time signatures and discordance, and the vocals relying on phonetics rather than words, the Happy Face sound is varied but constantly heavy. Akin to Napalm Death or fellow countrymen Nostromo, the chug-chug groove of Eternal Suffering and the timing of Meshuggah - a malicious blend of groovy, crushing death! In 2004 Happy Face signed a management deal with H.I.M. Media, and spent the summer recording their first full-length album entitled ‘Le Tigre’ with Benoit Brionne at Newdream Studios in Descartes, France. At the end of the year the band secured a licensing deal with Anticulture Records, home of rising metal heroes Gutworm and Interlock. The album was released across the UK and France to critical acclaim. Happy Face completed several tours in Europe promoting ‘Le Tigre’ covering the UK, France, Belgium and Malta, playing with many great bands such as Deicide, Total Fucking Destruction, Cryptopsy, Dew Scented, Vomit Remnants and Visceral Bleeding! Late 2005 saw the band’s first line-up change, amicably parting ways with vocalist Gilles and finding a replacement in Guillaume. After landing on their feet and playing a string of dates across Malta and France with Gutworm and Slit, the band are preparing for their second full length album. In 2006 the tiger rage will be unleashed again, more powerful than ever! now on 2008 Happy face back with new album Cd " Rage Vs Wisdom " by Independent Release. Hello! who is currently situated in the HAPPY FACE ( HF ) camp now?
Hey guys! Happy Face is a 4 piece deathcore band from Tours, France. The members are :
Julien : Drums // David : Guitare // Greg : Bass // Gui : vocals

Your band name very Simple word and not familiar with Characteristic a Death Metal Band, Some Funny or have a mean about name ha ha ha ...??
We chose the name Happy Face because it is far from the "clichés" of Death metal in general. This name also represents quite good our state of mind. We really enjoy playing our music, and every time we play live in front of a crowd, we're just happy to be here and share thisparticular moment... So we have a Happy Face ;)

First time, congratulation for new Cd has be released for Now, and How have people reacted to " Rage Vs Wisdom ", and what is the band doing now? are you satisfied with independent Release, for now HF Still searching for label?
The album has only been released 4 days ago through our myspace so it's hard to say, but the reactions are very good for the moment. Especially in Russia and Ukraine. People don't really know "Rage vs Wisdom" yet, but we have all the time we need to promote it, and this is what we're doing now, PROMOTION!!! We're satisfied with independent release because we have no "pressure" from anybody. We can take our time to do things the way we want to do them... Regarding a label, we're discussing with a few of them and if something interesting shows up, we'll certainly go for it!

How compare with first release in the underground with new Cd " Rage Vs Wisdom", This may some Progressive element music style.I hear some Big Influence from some Hardcore band much more here, Are You now into a Deathcore band ?
There clearly has been a huge evolution in our music compare to the first album. We all listen to lots of band from different styles from hardcore to death metal but we all love "modern bands" with a "modern sound". During the recording of "Rage vs Wisdom" we were listening to bands such as : Emmure, Oblige, White Chapel, The Acacia Strain, Unearth, Bury your dead, Ion dissonance, Recon, American me... Lot of american bands, maybe because the sound and energy they have is what we love the most right now.

What you HF Written on " Rage Vs Wisdom " and " Never Back Up, Never Back Down " ??
"Rage vs Wisdom" has 15 tracks on it. Those 15 tracks are all linked, and tell a story. "Never back up, never back down" is actually the last song we wrote. It basicly says that our passion for what we do is stronger than anything, and as long as we stay together and stick to our goals, nothing can break us down... Now if you want the full lyrics, they are all written on the CD booklet ... ;)

tell me, How response first time moment " Rage Vs Wisdom " Cd released? what HF keep some doing Any gig promotion for now?
Yes, we're definitly looking for gigs to promote this new album. We're planning a UK tour in June 2009 (dates TBA) and we're looking for a booking agency or anyone who could book us as many dates as possible because this is what we're doing music for, PLAY IT LIVE!!

Hey, what the Reason for Use Chinesse/ Japan Language for HF logo on this new album ?? are you sure with this band needed from beginning ??
It's because the "universe" in which the story of "Rage vs Wisdom" takes place has been influenced mainly by manga like Hokuto no Ken,Akira... So the japanese design was kind of natural to us. Happy Face's logos, designs and artworks (all made by Julien)have always been Japanese/Chinese like. Mainly because we grew up with mangas, video games and martial art movies and loved their designs and atmospheres.

How about " Tiger Style Brutality " ?? like as a Tiger Anger to Play band concept ??
Actually, it's always been hard for us to describe our music when people asked us. Because you know people love to put "tags" on a music style especially for metal bands. We like to say we're doing metal but it's not precise enough for people... So Tiger style brutality is what we do! Or deathcore if you want to call it like this ;)

For a Death Metal album , it's as extremely attitude for some potential members. but you're is keep kickin Style perform just for the best Music extreme creation, What are the conceptual topics and theme(s) of the this album? I see too for some Philosofy, life and death ...
There are lots of themes in the songs : greed, frustration, anger, revenge but also passion, dedication, commitment... But I guess the main Philosophy (so to speak) is duality. In the end, it's all a matter of "Rage vs Wisdom", Good vs Bad, Ying vs Yang and how we keep passing from one of these feelings to another everyday in our lives.

How long did it take to record " Rage Vs Wisdom " in the studio? What equipment are you guys using? can you list some specific details about what you use? String sizes, pick size, pickups, etc... Please :)
It took us about a month of studio to record the album (mix included). But we've been working A LOT before going to the studio. Regarding the equipment we use, the best would be to come see us live, because you know, a wizzard never tells his secrets... ;)

This is going to sound crazy, with some Digital Sounding, Especially for sound Dutiesd id this cross your minds and maybe band concept, are you enjoy with this ... :)
Sorry I don't understand this question ...

What has influenced each member for their respective position? Bury your dead, The acacia strain, Dying fetus , Emmure, ion dissonance, Meshuggah, Hate Breed, Japanesse slammy Brutal Death Metal ... ??
We've all been influenced by the bands you named and the one I told you before... We listen to a lot of bands, and not only metal bands.

What approach do you take to songwriting and who gets involved? You guys seem to incorporate a plethora of genres and influences into each song! and how with HF state with " Beyond a limit where all lifeforms would decay... " ? I see on your HF mspace ...
Most of the time, David comes with new guitare riffs and we play and arrange those riffs all together until we got something we like... There are indeed a lot of genres and influences in our music but this is just the way we feel like playing our songs... " Beyond a limit where all lifeforms would decay... " represents the "universe" of "Rage vs Wisdom", a kind of post-apocaliptic world.

all of you also good friendship with some France Deathmetal ?? I Know some great name like as INHUMATE, RECUEIL MORBIDE, HECTIC PATTERNS, BENIGHTED and more, maybe you can add name for THE HIGH RECOMMEND KILLER BAND for France Deathmetal Future?
All the bands you named are great band, I guess you could add Gojira, but I'm sure they don't need any introduction anymore...

Please give me for 10 album Most Death Metal Album list for HF lifetime....
Thats a hard one!! You know we listen to a lot of bands of different styles and we constantly try to discover new bands that rock! If we have to take 10 Death Metal albums, I would say :
Dying fetus : - Killing on adrenaline
- Destroy the opposition
Suffocation : - Pierced from within
- Despise the sun
Bolt Thrower : - For victory
Vomit remnant : - Indefensible Vehemence
Gorefest : - La muerte
Devourment : - 1.3.8
Soils of fate : - Crime Syndicate
Decapitated : - Nihility
But there so many bands and albums that have influenced us before and after those albums...

How Your Comment with new album maybe compare the Old masterpiece From

>> EMMURE - The Respect Issue
>> MESHUGGAH - ObZen
>> KREATOR - Horde of Chaos
>> ALL SHALL PERISH - Awaken the Dreamers
>> WALLS OF JERICHO - The American dreamer
>> THE FACELESS - Planetary Duality

It's actually hard to compare because we think that our music is really different from all those bands. But of course, I guess we're influenced by the bands we listen to a lot at the moment...

About Bootleging Stuff just for Promo Only, I see some Blogger has Upload some a new album, are you deal with this direction for us a real Promotion ?
We believe that bloggers make a real good promotion. We totally support them and this is one of the reason why we wanted to offer the possibility to people and bloggers to download the album on our myspace with our own MP3. It's the best way for us to get people to listen to our music.

and actually Download the full version on HF myspace. Just clic on the link and download it. The 15 tracks are in hogh quality MP3 320kbps ?? this Legal or Illegal Stuff for HF fans?? Buy the CD or make a donation if you feel like it.... Spread the sound !!! Tell your friends... ??
Everthing is totally legal as we are the producers and we are not under contract with any label for the moment. We believe that anyone who wants to listen to our music should be able to do so this is why we wanted to give people the choice to either download the album for free (and donate whatever they want if they feel like it) or simply buy the CD.
We want as many people as possible to listen to our music and know who we are and what we do.

Thanks a ton, guys! Last question, and this one is a doozy. What are your views on stem cell research, human cloning, and the "organic computers" that are sure to result from combining "flesh" with "technology"? Flying cars are quickly becoming a reality as well, what do you think of them? keep existing for extreme metal flames forever !!
In theory, stem cell research and cloning are "good" things, meant to "serve mankind" by curing diseases... etc But MEN are far from perfect and can easily be driven by greed, power..etc So when you start to imagine the things that MEN with "bad intentions" could do with such researches, it's getting kind of scary. Regarding flying cars, ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted to drive one. I was disappointed to see that in the year 2000 we were far from that technology. I really hope that I'll get to see or better drive one before I pass away... Thanks for this interview, hope you like the answers...
