Greets, this is Herry SIC doing LOST IN CHAOS Mediazine interview. Great to meet A BURIAL AT SEA indeed! You are brutal as fuck!
Hey! Thanks man, appreciate that.
How old were you when you first got into extreme metal?
Uhm...I think we were around 15 years old. But we didn't start to play it before we were nearly 17 years old.
Explain the name A BURIAL AT SEA ?
First our name was "buried at sea", but when we got on myspace, we found out that it was allready a band who had the name, so we made a twist on it, and we ended up with A Burial at Sea.
Tell us about yourselves, what are you like outside of A BURIAL AT SEA ? You look like a cool bunch of guys to hang out with! Actually we're kinda funny to hang out with, we always laughting and havin a good time. You guys involved in any other projects or bands we would want to know about?
No, we're like a bunch of gays, which everyone is boyfriends. If anyone is involved or play for another band, thats the same as being unfaithful.
You are from norway. Cool. good Black Metal. Born from here in "Horrid" are from Norway scene as well ? How Choice This Style? there much black metal come from here.
Yeah, we think its pretty cool that NORWAY of every fuckn country in the whole world invented black metal. We're proud!
Who, or what, are your biggest influences when it comes to writing music? What are your influences?
Everyone comes up with ideas and shit. Everyone in the band have diffrent taste of music so we drag inspiration from all sorts.
"Demo" is your First Release from Begin. Since I haven't heard the first one (yet), could you tell me a bit about you First debut CD Upcoming soon and the way it differs from "demo Ep ? and how with your new stuff " demo ep ", are you satisfied with that stuff now.
Yeah we're pretty satisfied with our demo actually. This is our first realease, but I can tell you a bit more off next release. It's going to be more technical stuff, and way more breakdowns, if everything goes according to plan we're going to record it at Fredman studios, with Fredrik Nordström. Thats going to be a kick ass EP. Hope to release that in the fall of 2008.
What responses did you get from the people, the scene and the zines in the Norway and the rest of the world on your previous releases?
Actully we got very good respons. Both from people we know and people outside the mighty globe. Just hope to get better respons on our EP.
You claim to be influenced by Deathcore. I can definitely recognise Death metal elements, mainly in the fast and aggressive but Dark riffing in the fast parts, and the deathmetal elements are very recognisable in the more angular midtempo parts, but somehow I have difficulty recognising the Death metal influences apart from mainly the Beat. Could you tell me a bit more about that and, in general, could you name a few bands, and perhaps some non-musical things (e.g. movies, books, etc) which form your main influences?
Our wide on inlfuences are so big. We love new bands like, Bleed From Within, Ignominious Incarceration, Winds of Plague, Sea of Treachery, Suicide silence...And we also love older bands like At The gates, Darkest Hour....We always take inspiration from diffrent movies like Pirates of the carribean, 300 LOTR and the Cannibal Collection...
The songs on "debut Ep " are quite long and complex. Could you explain to me how the actual songwriting process takes place within A BURIAL AT SEA?
First of all, its not an EP, its an Demo, but same shit. We always writing songs together, and often we have riffs, which we have made up before. And we always discuss how the song is going to start, you know, drums, guitar, vocal, melodic, heavier....And afterwords the same about next riff, and the breaks are important..
Name 3 bands you would love to share the stage with and Name 2 bands that you dislike
Uhm... That one is hard, maybe Job for a cowboy, cuz that was the band which we got much inspiration of, and listened to most when we started the band in the first place. I Killed The Prom Queen cuz legends never dies, when we first heard the "Music For The Recently Deceased"record, we didn't listened to anything else for a week lol. Seriously that is an awesome band, to bad they splitted up, but we wish them good luck with their new projects. And The Black Dahlia Murder cuz they're just awesome.
Who in the band writes your music? And Name one song you love playing live? Why? And What was the first concert you went to as a fan?
Everyone is a part of the writing actually. Everyone is fuckn selfish, so everyone have to be agree. I think that must be Pestilent ( Traitors and Cow Hearted ) cuz everyone know it. And we usually get guest vocals from Shot at Dawn. Sick band btw. You should check em out. As a real fan it must be Trivium, yeah.
Who manages the band, who does all the marketing, promoting and who is a lazy bastard?
PJ the drummer (of one strange reason there's always the drummers job to,do. haha) does all that shit. The rest is the lazy fuckers.
What is the funniest thing the happened to you while performing? (either to the band or to a band member) Were is the bands favorite place to play?
A drunk guy (with a hell of a mustage actually) jumped on the stage while playing, and pushed PJ off the drums and took his place and actually fullfilled the fuckn song without even a miss. That was hilarious, great time. Uhm...We actually love to play at Maybe Club Maiden in Oslo, nice people free booze.
Tell us of your most memorable show. What bands were playing and why was it memorable for you?
In May 2007, a short time after we started up, we were booked by this guy, to support Across Five Aprils, that was fuckn cool for a fresh band like us at that time, and it's even cooler that they're just getting bigger and bigger. They're great dudes to hang out with. Something that we'll never forget.
What advise would you give to someone who want to play extreme metal?
It's just 2 simple things to do, become familiar with the genre, and practice alot!
Your opinion about Mp3 Trading ?? Now is a Lot of some Blogger ( on web Blog ) Doing that activity. Just Uploading some stuff on sharing provider Hosting, they are Follow it spread the stuff worldwide, are you deal with it?? Give me for your some personal reason.
We are a metalband, do you think we care about money?..............FUCK YEAH we care about money. No seriously, we're happy as long as people like our songs enough to download them and maybe transfer them to their ipods/MP3/phones whatever...But of course it's a bit annoying that bands use precious time and money from their own wallets to make a record which the opinion is to sell, to make some money, and people just download em for free and the bands earns nothing. But it's impossible to do anything about it, so we don't care.
So, you have been on big events in the Deathcore genre, on several big and small festivals. In your opinion, what was your best show, and what the best fest/happening you appeared, and destroyed?
We were going to play at Metalmarket in Birmingham last year, togheter with: Carnifex, Sylosis, Random conflict, and The Argent Dawn and some other bands. But there was a mess up between some record labels and stuff, and show was cancelled. Too bad, cuz that had been awesome.
Do you guys have a hobbies/interests, beside playing Deathcore?
Not really, just playing Xbox, Watching Family Guy, drink and hangin out.
Is there any thing you want our readers to know that I didnt ask you or talk about already?
No, man, you're a hell of a good interviewer.
Any comments or thoughts you would like to express at this time to those reading this?
Som words of wosdom "Life is too short to bother about trifles"
Are you Know some Indonesian Fucking Metal scene there? Some band / Zine / Label / distro or Individual person?
